Can I take Nicovape® Q on an aeroplane?

You can take Nicovape® Q on flights in your cabin baggage but not your checked baggage. Due to air pressure changes, cartridges may leak. This article explains how to minimise this risk.

Important note: There are strict rules about flying with vapes in Australia. Specifically, under Australian law:

  1. You must not package vapes (aka e-cigarettes) in checked baggage
  2. Using and charging e-cigarettes is not permitted onboard commercial aircraft

These rules are generally the same around the world, but you should check the laws around vaping in general and flying specifically when travelling to any foreign destination

The air pressure changes when flying are strong and can cause cartridges to leak.

Short of sealing a cartridge in a pressure-proof chamber, the strong changes in air pressure experienced during flight mean that any vape taken on a plane is at risk of leaking.

Therefore, Liber cannot guarantee that there will be no leakage but can offer some suggestions for minimising the risk.

These suggestions differ slightly depending on whether the cartridge has already been opened or is still in its original packaging.

Previously opened Nicovape® Q Cartridges.

There is no protective barrier (blister packaging, box) to stop the liquid from leaking from opened cartridges, so if you take one on a flight, there is a high chance that it will leak.

However, if you do choose to fly with an opened Nicovape® Q cartridge, you are most likely to prevent leakage by keeping it upside-down, with the mouthpiece end facing down.

Additionally, you should either:
  • Disconnect the opened Nicovape® Q Cartridges from your Nicovape® Q Device and keep the Nicovape® Q Cartridge in a piece of absorbent towel or
  • If you keep the Nicovape® Q device and cartridge connected, engage the puff-activation lock by tapping the USB-C port five times.

In both cases, you should ensure the cartridge is upside-down for the duration of the flight.

Unopened Nicovape® Q cartridges

Liber has tested Nicovape® Q cartridges packaged in their original blister packaging and box for pressure changes that exceed those experienced in flight. We have not seen any leakage.

However, it's not possible to fully reproduce the conditions Nicovape® Q might be subjected to during travel, so we can't guarantee that flying will be 100% leak-free.

To minimise the possibility of leakage, please adhere as closely as possible to the following:

  1. Keep the cartridges in their original box, ideally with the outer wrapping intact.
  2. Keep the box upright, where possible. The cartridges are packaged mouthpiece-down to minimise the possibility of leakage.

If you don't have the outer packaging, keep any unopened cartridge blisters in a sturdy case to prevent them from being squashed, which will cause the cartridge to leak.
